International Academic Support (IAS) finished until January 9th 2017

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and Happy New Year ☃️🎉🎄

Thank you for coming to see us in 2016. IAS has been helping international students using full-time instructors for 5 years now. The number of students coming to see us has dramatically increased, and fortunately IAS staff has grown to three full-time members.

Nothing gives us more pleasure than helping students succeed, so make sure you stay in touch with us starting January 9th for the spring semester.

Please print out your assignments/writing before you meet us or allow us to use track changes/comments so we can help increase your skill set. We don't edit or make changes on your computer. Instead, we help guide you to understand your mistakes so eventually you can edit your own work. This policy applies to the Writing Centre also.

I hope this helps. Your comments are welcome!

Appointments and Drop In Available

If you have course assignment issues or language concerns, please contact us at englishsupport@viu.ca. We can offer appointments in the library Writing Centre and drop in. But if those times don't work, contact us and we'll work out a special appointment.
Don't forget May 23 is Victoria Day, which means it is a long weekend and a chance to recover. Recovery is a very important part of success. Check out Matthew's online tutorial of Student Success Strategies on our ELS Facebook page - https:///www.facebook.com/VIUELS/

March 17th is Earth Hour

It's Earth Hour today! The mural/sculpture below, located out side VIU's Bookstore,  was inspired by the Ist Nation's belief that everything we do has a reaction. The stones in the middle of the four hands represent the human connection to earth and its inhabitants. It reminds me of the metaphor of a stone thrown into a pond and ripples on the water touch the edges of the pond. We're all connected. The rainbow picture reminds us to 'Love Where You Learn'.

Building World Knowledge with ELS on Facebook

The ELS Facebook page now has interesting 3-5 minute talks that can help build your world knowledge. Also, these make excellent listening practice since they usually come with a quiz!
Here are some examples: 'Redefining Happiness', 'What really happens to the plastic you throw away.', and 'History through the eyes of the potato'.
We'll post one or two per week so stay tuned!

English Language Support Tutorials

Here's some news about where to find useful tutorials for reading and research. If you go to YouTube,

you'll find tutorials on library research, using APA, reading strategies, and reading and

annotating for summary writing.

Earth Hour Thursday March 17

On Thursday, March 17 (the perfect day for being green), we’re inviting the VIU Nanaimo campus to—

·   turn off unneeded lights, monitors, and other equipment during their lunch breaks
·   come outside and see us at the TD Plaza by the bus loop for prizes and popsicles
as a primer for Earth Hour (Saturday, March 19 8:30-9:30)

We need a little help from you!
We’ll be looking at B250 and B255 specifically to see if turning off anything that can be turned off during a break makes a difference in the amount of electricity used. Even if you choose not to stop by and visit on Thursday, we hope you’ll take a moment to switch off any device that can be switched off during your break.
And if you can share this information with your students/colleagues, that would be very much appreciated. More information can be found here: bit.ly/VIUEarthHour16
A similar electricity use target was done at B350 during Wacky Woolies Week. We asked that they turn down thermostats by 2for the week, and their efforts resulted in an estimated 14% drop in electricity use over the week. J
